Overview

Over 10,000 people come to the Winthrop Rink each winter to skate on our ice. Our Ice Equipment Operators – that’s a Zamboni driver – make regular cuts to maintain the ice. These staff are part of the team that makes the games and programs safe and fun. We provide training to operate and monitor the array of equipment we use to make our ice some of the best ice in the region. Ice Equipment Operators report to the Facility Manager and support our staff and programs during our wide variety of daily activities throughout our sixteen-week ice season.

duties & responsibilities

Primary

  • Maintain our ice to the best of your ability

  • Operate the Zamboni safely and productively

  • Receive training to improve the quality of ice

  • Remove snow from the ice and surrounding facility

    • Operate our MT5 drive-in snowblower safely and efficiently

    • Operate other snow removal equipment to maintain a safe facility

    • Snow removal requires paid time in advance of regularly scheduled shifts

  • Support on ice activities

  • Understand all equipment needed to maintain ice and conduct on ice activities

  • Conduct emergency repairs to the facility and equipment under direct guidance of supervisor

  • Maintain a log of equipment and work done each shift

  • Support coworkers and daily Rink operations

Secondary

  • Assist with customer service tasks, including:

    • Fulfill skate requests

    • Sharpen skates

    • Fulfill concessions and merchandise requests

    • Support Rink operations

    • Assist with routine facility maintenance

Qualifications

  • Comfortable working in cold and/or wet conditions outside

  • Able to repeatedly lift 50lbs

  • Ability to persevere during stressful situations

  • Punctual and focused on timeliness

  • Able to work alone

  • Skilled at identifying and asking for support during challenging situations

  • Experience operating equipment

  • Pleasant to work around and comfortable with customers

  • Available for regular shifts: ~8 hours/shift, same day+time/shift each week, during a seven day, 70 hour operating schedule that can include early mornings, nights, and weekends

23/24 Season Schedule

  • Pre season prep: 10/2-10/24

  • Ice installation: 10/16-10/21

  • Driver training: 10/23-10/27

  • Ice season: 10/28-3/10

  • Post season: 3/12-3/29

  • New drivers must be available for up to 10 hours of training during our training week

  • New drivers are expected to work a minimum of two shifts per week to maintain proficiency

Wages and Benefits

  • Starting wage: $22 per hour

  • Committed staff are eligible for complimentary season passes to the Winthrop Rink, Methow Trails and/or Loup Loup Ski Bowl
